Hi everyone! Great meeting you all today.
Here's the actual post for this weeks assignment with a couple of examples. We'll be using https://coggle.it/ to create a mind map (it should be free) to reverse engineer an existing design. Once again be aware that if you choose a very rigid object your results will be less than optimal like some of the examples I showed from the previous year - so choose wisely! Also think about the angle that you're going to be doing the flow breakdown: ie don't do 3/4! orthographics are best (front, side, top, back) but keep in mind the main way a product will be viewed as those views will be the most considered. Also continue the lines PAST where they end to see how they interact/intersect with others potentially - don't just keep them contained to the form. And like the example of the water heater -which is generally good - don't confuse perspective curvature for flow (ie choose your image wisely)! Really think about the reasoning and the benefits to some of these shapes and we'll have a brief discussion at the start of class on these! Good luck!
I forgot to mention but you can also post earlier than Friday - I check into the blog throughout the week and will sometimes give feedback sooner than an Saturday. This assignment is pretty easy/straightforward so don't be afraid to post it early if you want to - that way if there's any questions/uncertainty I can address them early so you can make the appropriate changes - or even ask those questions in the comment section of this post.
Like I mentioned at the end of the class - if you can think of anything that you'd like me to do a presentation on I'll be happy to fit it into the rough schedule/outline of the course. This includes Blender demos (specific requests are best so be like "intro to boxcutter/hardops", "how/why project textures easily onto a surface", ZBrush workflow, my sketching workflow, more indepth talk on lines and depicting form with line etc etc. Post your requests in the comment section of this post! Thanks and have a great week!
-Sean

Hey Sean, I'd be interested to see how you use Boxcutter in your workflow. I've been using it for awhile now and I don't think I've unlocked the full potential of it yet.
ReplyDeleteAlso an Intro for ZBrush would also be great!
